Top 7 Factors Preventing You From Training Correctly

1. Your willpower. Whenever you run, a voice emerges in your head that tries to convince you that you are too tired, bad at running, and need to stop. Overcoming this temptation will make all the difference between successful or incomplete workouts. Are you going to take things easy today because you had a rough night, and find yourself “too tired”? Can that last mile you should be running be put off until tomorrow? You better get your mindset right or you will never run a marathon.
2. Your training plan. Simply enough, if your workout plan sucks, then so will your marathon time. That is, if you even finish the race at all. To help you find an ideal training guide, look for these basic principles:
- Rest time. If you find an “amazing workout plan” that has you running everyday, toss it! Without proper rest your body can never develop the endurance to run a marathon.
- Variety. Marathon runners do more than just run. They also use advanced lifting routines to enhance muscle stamina.
- Modern technique. Is your training plan 10 years old? Chances are, through new scientific studies it is invalid because old understanding of the body have been over-ruled.
This workout plan is ideal because it uses modern principles that fully and effectively enhance your body and prepare you for a marathon. (This is just an example, but you can learn more about the “100 Day Marathon” at http://www.marathon-training-schedule.com/marathon-training.html).
3. Your Nutrition. Variety is definitely key when it comes to what you eat. Even if you are eating healthily, consuming the same types of food every day does not provide your body with the essential needs. Carbohydrates are the vital source for your body’s energy, so they will be most often referred to. I can’t tell you what you need to eat each day because it’s different for each workout plan. As a general rule, try to consume more carbohydrates (especially protein) on days that your are resting.
4. Your Job. Preparing for a Marathon is seriously time consuming. I would love to tell you that all you need to do is quit your day job, but unfortunately thats not an option for most people. Instead, get your sleeping habits in order, and master the art of time management. Get organized.
5. Your health. Getting sick is one of the biggest reasons that long-distance runners miss an entire week or more of training. A week? Yes, a week of laying in bed gathering unnecessary calories and fat. Avoid disease by keeping your hands clean, always washing them before you eat. Stay away from places that are crowded with infection.
6. Your injuries. Sadly enough, lack of common sense is the number one cause of injury. Be smart! Lift the proper way, run the right amount of distance, and don’t play in that basketball game a week before the marathon! Some injuries are gradual, and can easily be prevented if caught early on. Keep a keen eye out for that “sore” muscle getting worse and worse, it might be pulled or torn.
7. Your stress. I cannot even begin to describe how impossible it is to stay healthy when you are depressed. But stress can easily be controlled! Smile, laugh, and keep a positive attitude. Imagine how happy you will be when finish the race you have worked so hard to train for.
